MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee County Parks has been awarded $827,376 through the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the National Park Service to expand accessibility in its system.

According to a Wednesday, Oct. 1 press release announcing the grant, the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund will support projects connected to The Ability Center’s Moss Universal Park, billed as the nation’s first universally inclusive park.

The program, created in 1964 and funded through offshore oil and gas revenues, provides matching grants to states and local governments for outdoor recreation projects. In Wisconsin, it is managed by the DNR.

"Wisconsinites deserve parks and outdoor spaces that are accessible for everyBODY, inclusive of all abilities," State Rep. Robyn Vining said.
"Creating accessible public spaces is an issue of public health and human dignity."

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley said the grant will help the county continue to eliminate barriers. "Our parks are one of Milwaukee County’s greatest treasures, and this grant will help ensure that every person -- regardless of ability -- can enjoy them together."

Guy Smith, executive director of Milwaukee County Parks, said the funding underscores the system’s mission. "Parks are for everyone. This grant allows us to continue making good on that promise."
