FBI recognizes efforts of director of organization that helps victims of sex trafficking
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Franciscan Peacemakers organization has been in partnership with the FBI for years, and on Thursday morning the organization's director, Deacon Steve Przedpelski, was recognized by the FBI for his efforts in helping women in need.
Deacon Przedpelski was awarded the FBI's Director's Community Leadership award.
The Franciscan Peacemakers shelter, feed and employ women who've been sexually exploited or trafficked, that are dealing with trauma and addictions.
"We began simply as a street outreach, where we are here on 34th and Lisbon -- was/ still is considered to be one of the highly prostituted neighborhoods in the city of Milwaukee. We're here on purpose," said Deacon Przedpelski.
The organization's first client was referred to them by the FBI. They've helped countless women, like Phyllis Diggins, get back on their feet.
"I was one of the women who was on the streets prostituting and drinking to support my drug habit," said Diggins.
Diggins said nearly 20 years ago, Franciscan Peacemakers saved her life.
"They help me to do a lot of healing and help me to realize that I could have a life without the use of drugs," said Diggins.
The organization provides shelter for women in need, female essentials and employment through their bath goods business. Women who are interested help make soaps, bath bombs and other goods. All proceeds go back to the organization to help more women.
Deacon Przedpelski will be headed to Washington, DC to receive his award and meet the director of the FBI.
