Farm Sanctuary Holds 'Thanksgiving for Turkeys'

VERONA, Wis. - (CHANNEL 3000) A Verona farm sanctuary held its sixth annual “Thanksgiving for the Turkeys” celebration Saturday, putting a special twist on the traditional Thanksgiving feast.

At the Heartland Farm Sanctuary, the turkeys were not on the menu--they were the guests of honor and were treated to a meal of cranberries, squash, sweet potatoes and vegetables.

“A lot of farm sanctuaries in the area do this kind of thing around Thanksgiving, and we happened to have some turkeys we really wanted to honor,” Kate Atkins, chairwoman of the sanctuary’s board of directors, said. “They’re a wonderful part of our sanctuary and we thought right around Thanksgiving, why not give them a feast?”

Event attendees were able to sponsor a bird with donations, which will go toward the birds’ care. The sanctuary is currently home to more than 60 animals.
