EXCLUSIVE: Okauchee Man's Path to Recovery After Car Barreled Through his Garage
An Okauchee man was trapped after a car barreled through his garage. He's home from the hospital and is opening up only to CBS 58 about the night that changed his life forever.
The backdrop for the fundraiser held was the American Legion Post that Larry Hansen and his wife are members of. The support for Mr. Hansen's speedy recovery was far beyond what he and his wife Linda expected.
"It just amazes me, the prayers that we have," Larry Hansen said. Those prayers and support came as soon as people learned about, as Larry called it, a freak accident.
"I still can't get my head around it, really, but what happened happened," he said.
He remembers he was about to start a ten-minute car repair and that's all he remembers. His wife Linda heard what sounded like an explosion in the garage and called 911.
"I couldn't get through it so I ran outside and found a car in our garage. He was pinned against the wall in front of the car, I couldn't get to him," his wife Linda Hansen said.
"They just lept over everything to try and dig me out," Larry said.
He was flown to Froedtert Hospital. Larry's right leg had to be amputated, but after at least a half-dozen surgeries later, he's back home. Larry had to undergo surgery every other day in the hospital for a week.
He's now surrounded by his audio equipment which is his passion, the wife he loves, and the support from friends and strangers. All of this is helping him move forward.
"I'm a positive person and I think that's what has gotten me here," Larry Hansen said.
