FRANKLIN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Franklin Fire Department has released a statement after Thursday's fatal fire. Firefighters arrived on the scene around 9:30 a.m. and found the fire in the first-floor apartment to be fully involved. 

The woman has been identified as 81-year-old Gwendolyn Mosgaller.

FRANKLIN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- An elderly woman is killed and three firefighters hurt in a fire at an apartment building in Franklin. 

Residents at a senior living community were saddened to learn that one of their neighbors didn't make it out alive. 

The fire happened at the Woods Senior Living Apartment Complex on College Avenue. The Franklin Fire Department says the call came in around 9:30 Thursday morning about smoke coming from the hallway. 

Once crews got closer, they saw flames coming from a ground floor apartment. Three firefighters were hurt battling the smoke and flames. One was sent to the hospital with minor heat-related injuries. 

Officials say the victim already appeared dead when they found her. 

Several departments helped out, including West Allis and Cudahy Fire Departments. The State Fire Marshal and the Franklin Police Department are also investigating because the fire was deadly. 

"I came by to see what was going on because I do know that there are elderly people in this particular community. A someone in the community, we just want to find out what was going on," said Rochelle, who leaves nearby. "It makes me feel very sad. Very sad. It kind of breaks my heart that something like this has happened."

The medical examiner's office says they will be doing an autopsy on Friday. One person is not able to return home and is being helped by the Red Cross.

FRANKLIN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The American Red Cross says they are helping the resident of one apartment unit that was displaced from the fire. 

According to the Red Cross, the other residents have already returned or will be able to return later on Thursday.

FRANKLIN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Franklin Fire Chief says they were called to the apartment complex for smoke coming from a ground floor apartment. Firefighters got into the apartment through a window, but one firefighter suffered heat exhaustion and needed to be taken out.

After going back into the apartment firefighters found the woman who already appeared dead.

FRANKLIN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A fire at the Woods Apartments in Franklin is now fatal. 

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner tweeted that they responded to the apartments on College Avenue between 31st and 35th Streets for an elderly woman that died.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday.

The fire was reported around 9:30 Thursday morning.

A CBS 58 reporter at the scene reports that the apartments are a senior living community.
