Drivers push through slick roads and strong winds ahead of Thanksgiving
CBS 58 SLINGER, Wis. (CBS 58) — A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across parts of Wisconsin until 6 p.m. Wednesday, with snow flurries and wind gusts between 40 and 50 miles per hour creating challenging travel conditions one day before Thanksgiving.
Drivers have been coming and going steadily throughout the day as many try to get on the road before conditions get worse. Light snow and powerful winds have already started to make roads slick, especially around open stretches of highway and intersections where blowing snow reduces visibility.
Many travelers say the weather isn’t stopping their plans, even long-distance ones. Deborah Porter, who is heading to Kentucky for a more than seven-hour drive, says this kind of weather is nothing new for Wisconsinites.
“I'm from Wisconsin, so you get used to the weather - snow, rain, ice, whatever,” Porter said. “It doesn’t bother me. Everyone just needs to make sure they’re driving safe.”
Others hitting the road include drivers heading as far as Madison. Jeff Bohmann of Wauwatosa, who travels often for work, said staying smart behind the wheel is crucial during storms like this.
“I’m a smart traveler,” Bohmann said.
He added that the biggest danger comes from drivers who feel the need to rush.
“People always want to drive as fast as possible… fast passing people on the left and right,” he said. “It never pays to do that to get somewhere 10 minutes early.”
With snow continuing to fall and strong winds expected to last through the evening, it's important for drivers to slow down, give themselves extra time, and stay alert as weather conditions change.
Travelers should monitor updates throughout the day.
