DOT completely closing section of I-94 Friday night

The Zoo Interchange Project forces drivers to shift lanes, look for new exits and stay alert.  Friday night, a busy stretch of I-94 will completely close as workers will tear down the 76th Street bridge.



\"It takes a little bit more equipment and a little bit more personnel and it does take a little more time than typical so that's why we have the full freeway closure,\" Wisconsin DOT Construction Supervisor Jason Roselle said.



Access to eastbound I-94 from Highway 45 will close at 9 p.m.  East and westbound traffic on I-94 will completely shut down at 9:30 p.m.  The freeway between 68th Street and 84th Street will stay closed until 9 a.m. Saturday.



\"Definitely encourage people to get off the freeway system and get around the closure as early as they can,\" Roselle said.



Drivers can go around the work by taking Greenfield Avenue and Bluemound Road.



Down in Racine County more barrels mark construction work that's set to begin next week.



\"It's a little bit of a bumpy ride,\" DOT Spokesman Brian DeNeve said.



Crews will repave a 16-mile stretch of I-94 from County KR north to County G.  That will continue north into Milwaukee County.  One northbound lane will close starting Monday.



\"We've taken extra steps to make sure there's as little congestion going on during the daytime commute as possible,\" DeNeve said.



This all comes during a busy holiday weekend with plenty of traffic expected on the roads.



\"Keep in mind, these construction workers have a hard hat and maybe some standing barricades they're behind, whereas you're in a large vehicle going 60 miles-an-hour,\" DeNeve said.  \"Just do the math.\"
