MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- October is domestic violence awareness month. On Thursday, Oct. 19, people wore the color purple to honor survivors.
In the United States, every minute, 20 people suffer from physical abuse from their partner.
The director of UMOS, the Latina Resource Center on Milwaukee's southside says there is a troubling trend in Milwaukee. Most of the murders we see in our community are domestic violence related.
The director says it's a situation that can be hard to get away from.
"The truth is the more options and resourced a victim has the safer they are. So, we believe you, we are here for you, and that is the message I want to leave for victims," said Mariana Rodriguez, the director of the Latina Resource Center.
If you are someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, there are several resources you can reach out to listed on the photo below. These organizations have staff available 24-7 to take your call.
There is a national domestic violence hotline as well. It's 1-800-799-7233.
