WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- Saturday, Oct. 23, is Wisconsin's Annual Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
The event offers a safe way to dispose of any prescription drugs you may have in your cabinet.
It also aims to educate the general public about the potential for abuse of these medications.
Unused prescription medications can cause public health and safety concerns. This includes forming drug addictions.
"You know many opioid users in treatment now began by using medicines that were prescribed to someone, not necessarily themselves," said Dr. Ryan Feldman of the Wisconsin Poison Center. "Hard to get that data, but data we do have supports that over 50% say they got it from a friend or family member, and some of them were taken without them knowing."
