UPDATE: Department of Justice investigating officer-involved death in Grant County

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The suspect the officers were making contact with was at a house at 14404 Millville Hollow Road in the town of Millville. It is still unknown how the suspect died but he has been identified as 45-year-old Roger Helgerson, Jr. He died from injuries sustained with the encounter with officers and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The involved deputy has been placed on leave.

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) – The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, at the request of the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, has been investigating an officer involved death that took place on the morning of September 1 after Grant County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to make contact with a suspect located at a residence near Highway 18 and Clark Road.

The involved deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.

The Wisconsin DOJ-led investigation of this incident has been a collaboration between DCI, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office has been fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.

DCI is continuing to collect evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Grant County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
