Dehumidifier Likely to Blame for Fire in Fox Point

Saturday morning at 3:26 AM, North Shore Fire/Rescue responded to 314 E. Spooner Road in Fox Point for a report of a fire in the basement of a home.

First arriving fire crews found heavy smoke conditions throughout most of the home and attacked the fire in the basement

Both occupants and all three family pets had safely evacuated prior to the arrival of the fire units. There were no injuries to the occupants, pets, or emergency personnel operating on the scene.

It appears the fire started in the immediate area of a dehumidifier unit located toward the center of the basement. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fire and water damage was contained to the basement; however there is extensive smoke damage throughout the home. The preliminary damage estimate to the structure and contents is approximately $50,000.

The occupant of the home was awakened to smoke alarms sounding in the basement and went to investigate. Upon reaching the first floor, he noted smoke coming through the vents of the home and ultimately noted heavy black smoke coming up from the basement. He was able to alert the other occupant of the home and then dial 9-1-1.
