Death investigation opened into Fort Atkinson fire that caused Amber Alert Friday night

FORT ATKINSON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) State Fire Marshal’s Office, with assistance from the Fort Atkinson Police Department, announced Saturday night, June 12, they are opening an investigation into a suspicious death and residential fire that took place on Friday, June 11, in Fort Atkinson.

Saturday's announcement comes less than a day following a statewide Amber Alert Friday night that ended with the recovery of two-year-old Emma J. Schoonover.

Authorities responded to a Fort Atkinson residential fire Friday morning, where responding crews also located a deceased adult victim in the residence.

Officials determined incident suspicious and were concerned for the location and imminent safety of Schoonover, who resided in that home.

Law enforcement issued a statewide Amber Alert but utilized an investigative lead and located Schoonover before the alert was sent to wireless phones across the state.

Authorities report that all individuals involved in the incident were known to each other.

A suspect has been arrested in relation to the fatal fire investigation.

Officials state this is an ongoing investigation and will be led by DCI in correspondence with other agencies.
