Day 8: Closing arguments delivered in Maxwell Anderson trial, jury deliberations resume Friday

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Testimony is over in the Maxwell Anderson murder trial, and the jury will now deliberate.

Both the state and the defense rested their cases Thursday; Anderson did not testify in his defense.

After 59 people testified over the course of seven days, the trial now rests with the 12 jurors who will continue deliberating Friday morning.

The state called its last witness Thursday afternoon, then rested. The defense also rested immediately after calling no witnesses. And Anderson did not testify, as is his right.

Assistant District Attorney Ian Vance-Curzan delivered the closing argument first: a 30-minute video presentation that recapped all the evidence presented.

An interactive map walked the jury through the case from start to finish, from the first time they he and Sade Robinson met three days before she disappeared, to their dates at bars, to their return to his home - then, the car's trip throughout the night, the burning car, and Anderson's trip back home.

There were many tears in the gallery on the side reserved for Sade's family.

Vance-Curzan asked the jury to use common sense and search for the truth.

“And there’s no question about the person responsible for doing it. The killer is him," Vance-Curzan said.

Defense Attorney Anthony Cotton then delivered his closing argument. As has been the defense's strategy throughout the trial, he focused on reasonable doubt. He said Anderson's behavior before and after, was not that of a killer. He said Anderson and Robinson went to public places before her disappearance and he did not try to hide after she disappeared.

PHOTO GALLERY:

Earlier in the day Thursday, jurors viewed explicit photos taken from Anderson's phone showing Sade Robinson face down on a red couch the night she went missing.

An investigator testified that the images were recovered during forensic analysis but could not confirm when they were taken due to later file modifications. Several courtroom observers left in distress as the photos were shown.

Milwaukee County Assistant District Attorney Ian Vance-Curzan: "How does Sade appear in this photo?"

Detective Mason Kohlhapp: "I can't tell based on- from this photo. She's face down on the couch, I can't tell if she's alive or dead or sleeping- I can't tell from this photo."

We also learned Anderson texted Sade's phone the morning after she was killed, saying good morning and asking how work was going.

Earlier, Anderson’s former partner-who he dated for about two years- testified anonymously about hidden compartments in his home and a beach he kept secret during their relationship.

She testified that after charges were filed against Anderson last year and she learned about the case, she reached out to authorities.

Images she had from outings matched the location where Robinson’s remains were later discovered.
