'Crisis Plan' in place on Brady Street for Halloween weekend due to safety concerns

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - The Brady Street Business Improvement District has been working with the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) in recent days to have a safety plan in place for Halloween weekend.

Starting Friday night, Oct. 31, MPD and private security teams will be able to check 31 security cameras on their mobile devices, to scope out potential problems.

“MPD has access to our cameras,” Brady Street BID Director Michael Sander said. “That’ll be the first time we’re doing that to see if they see something happening, they can stop the issue before it becomes a problem.”

There is also a new SMS message system that will allow businesses to quickly inform MPD about issues at the bars and restaurants.

“We can put everything in place, but we can’t stop masses of people coming in here,” Sander said. “We have a lot of MPD here and security to handle this situation.”

The reasoning behind the plan for this weekend is because of a Halloween party last weekend getting out of hand.

“People were here playing their own music, bringing their own bottles of liquor and you know just partying on the street and making it a nuisance,” Sander said.

Grace Roberts lives on Brady Street and was out a couple blocks down from the party.

“We were getting texts from our friends who we wanted to meet up with that it wasn’t possible because everything over here was chaos and they were shutting things down and weren't letting anyone else in,” Roberts said.

Roberts plans on going out this Halloween but is aware how quickly things can develop on Brady Street.

“It’s fun to dress up and I really like the kind of community aspect of everyone going out,” Roberts said. “It is a little more nerve racking, kind of anticipating some chaos and wanting to be safe.”

With extra security in place for Friday and Saturday night, the goal for Brady Street is to be a safe and fun place to spend time.

“This is unwelcomed, unnecessary and we do not want that in our street, and we don’t want to be known for that,” Sander said.
