MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Crews are continuing to work along Hawley Road following a water main break on Saturday.

The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works says a 16 inch pipe burst causing water to flow into the nearby neighborhood.

Resident Tammy Stenshaug said when she looked outside, she saw whitecaps in the street. She says the water rose to around six inches in her basement.

"I was a little upset at first," she said. "But then all you can do is laugh about it, it's like what are you going to do? It happened, you deal with it and just move on."

According to DPW Commissioner Jeff Polenske, the pipe from 1959 failed. Crews are still working to determine how and why it burst.

A partial opening of Hawley Road is expected on Tuesday. However, the road will not fully open for a few days.

"It was a big break," Polenske said. "We're working diligently to get this reestablished."

Those with damage are encouraged to file a claim with the city.
