WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The competency hearing for an 11-year-old boy charged with killing his own mother resumed on Friday, June 23.

The hearing was cut short last month after a new psychologist report was filed moments before he appeared in court.

On Friday, the psychologist who originally deemed the boy competent enough to be tried as an adult testified, explaining her reasoning.

Dr. Karyn Gust-Brey said, “Well, he uses a great deal of fantasy, and I really did think long and hard about that and every time I asked about the case. He didn’t confuse those areas."

She added, "He definitely is not the same as an adult but it’s whether he lacks the capacity to understand ... and I didn’t see developmental immaturity to impact this case.”

When asked about his imaginary friends or pets and hearing voices, she said that did not impact her overall evaluation of the boy.

“I did not see it as affecting his competency at this point in time. I mean, there are defendants who are psychotic and are competent."

Dr. Gust-Brey mentioned how some people are psychotic and still considered competent. That will be up for the judge to decide when they meet again on July 26.
