BURLINGTON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Burlington family of seven is working to get back on their feet after losing almost everything in a house fire.
This is the second time this year in which the Burkhart family is dealing with disaster. The community has stepped up to make sure that their story has a happy ending.
Rozette Burkhart says her family woke up to their smoke alarms going off early in the morning on December 6. She and her husband quickly rounded up their five kids and two pets and raced outside with only the clothes on their backs.
In only a matter of minutes, their home was fully engulfed in flames. They lost almost all of their belongings.
A staff member from St. Mary's Catholic School saw the family sitting in their car outside of their home that morning and decided to step in. The entire school gave them food and clothes to help them get back on their feet.
"Without them, we wouldn't have had food that day. We would not have had clothes. We would not have had blankets. The community themselves and all of the outpouring of love and prayers and then donating clothes and baby items, I don't know where I would be without them," said Rozette Burkhart.
A neighbor also set up a GoFundMe page to help the family.
