Community rallies around 14-year-old dog surrendered by family
NEW YORK (CBS 58) -- The story of a senior dog surrendered by a family in New York has sparked nationwide outrage online.
A post shared by Friends Forever Animal Rescue says 14-year-old Sophia was dropped off by her family this week. "This is the face of a 14 year old dog who just lost her home because they were moving," the rescue wrote.
The post garnered thousands of reactions, with many calling Sophia's story "heartbreaking" and questioning how anyone could give up their pet.
"She is confused and wondering where her people are and where she is going," the post went on to say. "How do I tell her she is safe?"
In an update Wednesday, the nonprofit shared that Sophia will be taken in by one of their vets.
"Thank you everyone who has sent kindness to our sweet girl, Sophia," the organization wrote. "We couldn't have asked for a better place for this little old lady."
A video shared on TikTok by the rescue says Sophia will be "living out her days in the country with a wonderful family."
"Sophia is all our dogs," Friends Forever Animal Rescue wrote. "She represents so much more than an old dog deserted in a rescue. She represents the possibility of change through compassion and people who are tired of seeing this happening so often."
