City of Milwaukee accepts applications for new taxi permits

MILWAUKEE -- For the first time in 22 years the City of Milwaukee is taking applications for new taxi permits. A steady stream of prospective permit holders are coming to city hall to apply for one of the 100 new taxi permits.

If more than 100 prospective drivers apply for the permits, a lottery will be held to determine which applicants get the permits. Driver Mohamed Ali says he drove for Yellow Cab for six years, and needs to drive on his own.

The legislation that increased the number of permits also set higher standards for taxi service quality. Anyone interested in applying for a new license needs to do so before the end of February. The lottery to determine who gets the permits will be held in March.
