Chainsaw carving transforms Wauwatosa firefighter into 'Jaker the Maker'
WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Wauwatosa firefighter known for responding to emergencies is spending time off duty creating intricate works of art with a chainsaw.
Lieutenant Jake Patnode suits up at Station 53 in Wauwatosa, where he has worked for nearly 20 years. Patnode detailed his essential gear and tools when speaking with CBS 58, calling his Halligan bar "basically a key to any door."
When the fire station call tones go quiet, Patnode turns to a different set of tools.
Three years ago, after cutting up a fallen branch, he watched a television program featuring chainsaw carving. He decided to try it himself, creating his first bear sculpture.
"That night I was sitting, just watching TV, and watched some guy on TV carve a bear and I was like, I kinda want a bear."
What started as a hobby has grown into a business. Patnode, who now goes by "Jaker the Maker," spends time in his woodshop almost every day. He crafts pieces ranging from a 16-foot totem pole to a 1,000-pound bench and detailed animal figures.
Patnode said whether he is saving lives or bringing wood to life, he carves out time to do what he loves.
"I’m still learning, but I’m getting there."
