WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- Defensive linemen like Skyler Gill-Howard always get overshadowed by the quarterback.

"They [Northern Illinois] took a chance on me, not knowing anything because I left Upper Iowa with no film," Skyler Gill-Howard says. "So, without those guys. Behren, Behren Morton, our starting quarterback."

"Can you tell your starting QB that they get enough spotlight?" Lance Allan said. "Like the D linemen need a little love. He's like photobombing you in the background."

"Man, I'm gonna let him have it. I'm gonna let him have it all. He's having an exceptional season. But I might slip that under him at some point," Gill-Howard says with a laugh.

But what a season it's been at Texas Tech, as the Greenfield grad is playing in the playoffs after transferring from Northern Illinois.

"I wanted to go to Wisconsin. It didn't work out there," Gill-Howard says. "So, I was struggling for another week because I'm like, man, where am I going to go, because I only entered the portal to go to the Badgers."

Looking back, he can't thank the Greenfield Hustlin' Hawks enough.

"Greenfield shaped me into the athlete that I am. And I couldn't be more grateful for that city," Gill-Howard says.

And now, he's viewed as a leader.

"Yeah, at the end of the day, somebody has to be a leader. And I took it upon myself to be that because I wanna be the role model for kids back in Greenfield," Gill-Howard says.

Speaking of leading, he recently graduated with a degree in leadership studies.

"It meant everything to me, but it meant more to my parents because ultimately that's what they wanted to see," Gill-Howard says. "They didn't -- I mean, obviously, they care about football. They wanted to see me graduate, walk across that stage, because that's gonna last forever."
