CBS 58's Hometown Athlete: Brewers welcome Wisconsin native Danny Jansen
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- In 56 seasons of Milwaukee Brewers baseball, there have only been around 20 hometown athletes who have played for the Crew. CBS 58's Scott Grodsky introduces us to the newest one: Danny Jansen.
Jansen was born in Illinois, but he grew up around Wisconsin baseball. The Brewers new catcher moved to Appleton as a kid, just a quick drive away from what is now his home ballpark.
"I've been here as a fan many times and it's cool to be in the home dugout," said Jansen. "Definitely lives up to the hype."
Jansen's first experience with pro baseball came as a kid when his family hosted some of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers during the season. Now his family gets to watch him in the majors.
"Definitely looking forward to it [being here] family and friends not too far away. Cool opportunity, cool experience," said Jansen.
But the Brewers didn't add Jansen for a feel-good homecoming story. They added the 30-year-old catcher to provide consistency and power backing up William Contreras. Jansen has 11 homers already this year and some playoff experience.
"Meaningful games along the stretch is a lot of fun, it's what we play for," said Jansen. "I'm grateful for the experience I have in those games and being here it's going to be a lot of fun."
Contreras calls Jansen a tremendous catcher but was quick to note his role isn't changing. Contreras will be the Brewers usual starter down the stretch.
