CBS 58 checks out some of Milwaukee's favorite bagel spots on National Bagel Day
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- You don't have to go to New York to wait in line for a freshly made bagel. Whether you're into the schmear or the sandwiches, some bagel shops in Milwaukee are being recognized for their tasty bagels.
Ruby's Bagels on North Avenue was called one of the best in the US outside of New York. Daniela Varela started in a food truck. Now, people have come to know her homemade flavors like Rosemary Sea Salt and Cinnamon Cranberry. Varela still runs her food truck March through December.
Allie Boy's Bagels has become a local favorite with a cult following for bagel lovers in Milwaukee. There are two locations: on Farwell and National Ave.
Husband and wife, Ben Nerenhausen and Staci Lopez, are always looking for ingredients and ways to put a twist on the breakfast favorite.
"We're definitely pushing the boundaries of what you can and can't do with the bagel," said Nerenhausen.
Lopez grew up in New York, and bagel shops serve as a great childhood memory with her father.
"It's a staple in my diet, and I didn't realize that's not the normal for everyone," said Lopez.
National Bagel Day is one of their favorite days to be in the kitchen.
"It's become our Super Bowl. We just get really excited about it," said Lopez.
Allie Boys and Ruby's Bagels are open Thursday through Sunday.
