Hundreds go "Wild for Rhinos" during Milwaukee Co. Zoo's grand celebrations of new outdoor rhino habitat
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- On Saturday, hundreds flocked to the Milwaukee County Zoo for the grand celebration of the new outdoor rhinoceros habitat.
The "Wild for Rhinos" event featured hours of family-friendly activities including art and a scavenger hunt.
"We're so excited," said Sarah Aune, who's been visiting the zoo for years. "So happy, yeah, it's nice to see them in this environment, we've been walking past it for years now and it's been empty."
Currently, the zoo has Kianga and Zuri -- two eastern black rhinos.
"Now it's nice to see that it has new occupants and the indoor enclosure is incredible," Aune said.
And amid the peacocks, geese, and giraffes, staff officials said this is a long time coming.
"So, the whole footprint of this area existed before and it's just been renovated to provide rhinos an opportunity, a larger space," said Communications Manager Megan O'Shea. "We want to make sure that guests can come and see animals anytime of the year."
Especially when Kianga and Zuri are here on recommendation for a species survival plan.
"The goal is to hopefully breed, and they are an endangered species, so we want to make sure that species thrives and having them inside and outside and educating guests and teaching people about them is one way to do that as well," O'Shea said.
The Milwaukee County Zoo is open until Memorial Day weekend from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. After that, the closing time will extend until 5 p.m.
