Brewers play through smoky conditions as wildfire smoke impacts Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — The Brewers resumed play at American Family Field on Friday night following the All-Star break.

Wildfire smoke from Canada moved into Milwaukee late this week, causing unhealthy air quality levels.

There were questions about whether the Brewers would play Friday night, but the game went on with the roof open.

“Yesterday it hurt to breathe, so I wasn't sure if the roof would be open or not,” Brewers fan Lina Caceres Thyben said. “I have an immunocompromised son and another son that’s really worried about things, so I’m supporting him as well as my own health.”

Nate and Justin Vargas, DJs from California, threw out the ceremonial first pitch Friday night.

“I’m not gonna lie, compared to California, Milwaukee is kind of hitting that tipping point like California,” Nate Vargas said.

Dr. Jonathan Kurman is with the interventional pulmonology team at Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

He said attending outdoor events is a judgment call and that many factors can affect a person's health.

“It depends on how much particulate matter you will inhale, which is a reflection of how long you’ll be there, exactly where your seats are, how the wind is blowing, etc.,” Kurman said.
