Wellpoint Care Network hosts back-to-school bash for Milwaukee families

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — Families in Milwaukee received some extra help preparing for the school year Saturday during Wellpoint Care Network's Back to School Bash.

The free event along Capitol Drive offered backpacks, school supplies, food, drinks, music, games and prizes, giving families a chance to celebrate the start of the school year while easing some of the financial pressure that can come with it.

"We know this time of the year can be very challenging for families that are worried about cost of living," Wellpoint Care Network President and CEO Reggie Newson said. "So anything that we can do to support families by providing resources like backpacks, school supplies, it provides a tremendous resource and we're happy to help."

For some families, the event was also a convenient way to connect with neighbors and enjoy the atmosphere close to home.

"I live on 87th Street. It's just a three-minute walk, five-minute walk. Why not just come here? And it's been a beautiful one," said Kehimde Gbadebo, a teacher at Riverside High School.

Gbadebo said the event was especially meaningful as his oldest child begins kindergarten.

"My first child just got into K5, so I'm excited for that," he said.

Organizers said events like the back-to-school bash are intended to support families beyond just providing supplies.

"We know that events like this build healthier communities, and healthier communities provide hope," Newson said. "Certainly, we want to make sure that our families feel hopeful, supported."
