Black Lives Matter Initiative at MPS

A new budget item for Milwaukee Public Schools is getting a lot of attention.

Last night the school board heard from concerned citizens voicing opinions about a new Black Lives Matter Initiative in the budget for next year. Some are concerned it's going to the Black Lives Matter movement.

MPS says the $470,000 does not go to the national social movement, but rather a cultural curriculum.

Khalil Coleman (pictured above) is an instructor at MPS and founder of Changing Lives Through Literature who backs this initiative. "Black is more than just a color. Black is a consciousness and a culture that must be taught. In our school system it's not about Black Lives Matters saying that other lives don't matter, but when we look at the statistics we can understand and we can see."

The final vote on the 1 billion dollar school budget is expected Thursday.
