Behind the scenes of the rapid rise of MSOE's swim program

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- In 3 short years, MSOE went from this...

"The first year, the previous head coach.  He was quite literally going around campus," MSOE Head Men's and Women's Swim and Dive Coach Renata Schlomann says.  "Seeing students that had swim apparel on.  Or looked like swimmers and quite blatantly were just like. Do you wanna swim?"

To this...

"From I believe 200th plus," MSOE swimmer Caleb Brewer says.  "To 100th last year.  And then again, this year to go from 100th to like 50th.  It's been really cool."

"I think one of the biggest thing that has been very very interesting is the quickness," Schlomann says.

On this night?  They practice at Nicolet High School.  The Raiders also workout at St. Augustine Prep and the Schroeder Aquatic Center.  With no pool of their own.

"When I came and toured?  I was talking to Joel and he was saying.  I'll go let you see one of the pools that we swim at.  I was like, you mean one of the pools?  He was like yeah, we swim at like, three different pools," Brewer says.

"We typically practice around 7, 7:30pm," Scholmann says. "Every single day of the week.  And when we start practice that late?  We typically don't finish up until after 9pm.  And once the athletes are ready to head back?  They probably get to campus around 10 p.m.  And that's a late night for them.  And they wake up early in the morning for morning practice the next day and keep doing it for six months."

But MSOE is already a top 50 ranked program in the nation.  The quickest climb in any college division.  And the team clearly wants more.

"None of the programs in the southeastern Wisconsin area or even northern Wisconsin area or Wisconsin period, thought we would be at the caliber that we are within the three short years," Schlomann says.
