MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- There could soon be some "egg-stra" perks for backyard chicken owners in Wisconsin.
A group of lawmakers are proposing legislation that would allow residents to own up to four backyard chickens.
Right now, it's up to each municipality to set their own rules.
The bill aims to address a patchwork across the state as some communities like West Allis have outright bans on residential chickens, while others have a set limit.
Milwaukee allows residents to have up to four hens.
During a public hearing Wednesday, March 19, a woman from Greenfield testified to lawmakers about recently getting rid of her chickens due to a city ordinance.
"It teaches them so much and brings families together, and in this day and age, we need more togetherness," said Rebecca Bock, former chicken owner.
The bill was introduced last session but stalled after never receiving a vote on the floor.
Opponents argue the measure takes away local control.
