Apartment Fire in Sheboygan Displaces 17

The City of Sheboygan Fire Department responded to the report of a possible structure fire located at 929 N. 9th Street at 5:01 PM Sunday evening.

Reports indicated that smoke was seen coming from the windows. Upon arrival, firefighters entered the three story building, which consisted of closed businesses on the first floor and 17 apartments on the upper two floors.

All of the tenants were alerted by the smoke alarms and were outside. Firefighters entered the large building and encountered smoke throughout. Initially, they had difficulty locating the fire, but soon found it on the first floor in a rear lunch room.

When they opened the closed door to the lunch room, they encountered high heat conditions with heavy smoke. The air that was introduced into the room reignited the room and was quickly extinguished. However, smoke from the fire traveled throughout the entire building.

Firefighters spent the remainder of their time on scene searching for possible extension and venting the building of the large volume of smoke.

The Sheboygan County Fire Investigation Team was requested and responded to the scene.

The Red Cross was also requested to respond to the scene to assist the approximately 17 displaced tenants.

The fire is currently under investigation.
