WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A man is dead in Waukesha after an interaction with officers early Tuesday, April 9, during which he was struck by officer fire.

Police responded to a call of a theft in progress at a Carmax near Bluemound and Kossow, leading to a brief foot pursuit.

Officers saw actions from the suspect that they believed were consistent with a firearm being drawn, leading to a shooting of the 50-year-old suspect.

Police say that medical aid was called for immediate care, but he did not survive.

A total of four officers were involved in the incident, with no confirmation of how many of the officers actually fired their weapons. All have been put on administrative leave, as is policy for officer-involved shootings.

It was later discovered that the suspect did not have a firearm.

An independent investigation by the Milwaukee Police Dept. is underway, and results will be submitted to the Waukesha County District Attorney's office for review.
