3-week-old infant dies following dog attack in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Grand Rapids Police are investigating after a 3-week-old infant was pronounced dead at DeVos Children's Hospital following a dog attack.

It happened at a home in the 1100 block of Kalamazoo Avenue SE at approximately 6:00 p.m. Thursday.

Police tell us a preliminary investigation indicates the 3-week-old child was left alone in the house with three pit bulls.

When an adult checked on the infant, the child had a severe head injury and one of the dogs had blood around its mouth.

Police tell us the infant was transported to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, where she received emergency surgery. But the child was pronounced dead 7 hours later.

As per policy, all three dogs were taken to the Kent County Animal Shelter where they are placed under quarantine.

No arrests have been made at this time, and the incident remains under investigation.
