Teen shot and killed near 39th and Cherry, identified as Milwaukee 17-year-old
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The victim has been identified by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner as 17-year-old Jalerian McDade of Milwaukee.
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 17-year-old is dead following a shooting near 39th and Cherry early Tuesday, May 6 – just one day into the citywide celebration, “Peace Week.”
Police say it happened around 2:30 a.m. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Why do our children have access to firearms?” said Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffery Norman.
Peace Week is an initiative launched by Mayor Cavalier Johnson to foster peace and safety in the city. It's a week-long celebration with multiple events and rallies to engage local leaders and nonprofits to build community. On Tuesday, elected officials spoke with students at Riverside University High School.
“There’s been a lot of fights, a lot of really violent things happening around me,” said Brooklyn Taylor-Peace, a Riverside University High School student.
Mayor Johnson says this shooting is an example of why conversations about fostering peace and safety with kids in Milwaukee is necessary.
“It’s about bringing the community to be involved in some of these solutions as well, and empowering the community too, to understand that they have a voice, they have power in building safety in our community,” said Johnson. “But there’s an issue with access. Access to guns. That’s a person who shouldn’t have had access to guns.”
Students say they hope elected officials are listening to their concerns.
“It gets in the way of our education; it gets in the way of our relaxation time. We don’t know what’s happening, but we feel it all around us,” said Taylor-Peace.
Chief Norman says Peace Week isn’t just about city officials and nonprofits promoting peace – families must, too.
“This is why we have to have these conversations,” said Norman.
