MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 16-year-old Milwaukee boy plead guilty to second degree reckless homicide for a shooting that took place in October of last year.
Deondre Davis plead guilty to 2nd degree homicide in the shooting death of 12-year-old Marquell Newburn.
Davis will serve 7 years in confinement and 8 years of extended supervision.
“You know, but you’re young. You’re doing stupid stuff. You don’t think about the impact of your family, the victim’s family,” said Brandy Moore, the victim’s aunt. “I’m very upset. I’m angry.”
Back in late October of last year, Milwaukee police were called to a shooting near 48th and Center. When MPD arrived, officers found Newburn unresponsive inside a stolen minivan. He had been shot in the face by his friend, then 15-year-old Deondre Davis.
“I would like to say that I’m sorry for the pain I’ve caused to the family and I wish I could take everything back,” Davis said in court Wednesday morning.
Milwaukee Police say Davis and Newburn had been sitting inside the minivan when Davis pulled out a gun and pointed it at Newborn in a joking manner. The gun, which was loaded, went off, killing Newburn.
“This is what we have to deal with,” said Moore.
Davis plead guilty to second degree reckless homicide in court, Wednesday, July 16.
“I will still pray for this young man and pray for his family, something that I really wanted to say,” said Moore.
In court, Davis' attorney stated there has not been a day since Newburn’s death that Davis hasn’t regretted his actions.
“This young man has demonstrated an acceptance of responsibility that I have never seen, even in adult clients,” said Assistant Public Defender Keigan Eide.
Davis agreed he needed to serve time for the pain both Newburn's family went through – and his own.
“I just wish he was still here. Wish we was still with each other right now,” said Davis.
