SOMERS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- It is the time of year for pumpkin farms, corn mazes, and apple picking. But a trip to the corn maze turned frightening for families in Kenosha County on Friday, Oct. 9. The Kenosha County Sheriff's Department says a 16-year-old boy was arrested after he brought a gun and empty magazine to a corn maze at Jerry Smith Farm in Somers.

Authorities responded around 8 p.m. after several people said they saw a boy with a handgun inside the maze.

Farm security told authorities the boy ran away when approached, dropping the gun in the corn stalks. A deputy and k-9 recovered them, and the teenager was eventually arrested.

"It's pretty scary, I don’t know what his intent was, what he was planning on doing with it. Whether it was a joke or just to carry, I mean anything could've happened." — Andrea Salgado

With the unusually warm weather drawing big crowds to fall businesses, safety is on the back of their minds.

"It's distressing. It's sort of a sign of the times though," shared William Brodne, visitor.

William Brodne, who was visiting from Illinois, said he came for the "fantastic selection of pumpkins" and didn't see security, but also noted he didn't see any reason for it midday on Monday. He went on to say the location is in a safe area and they'll be going back.

"It's something I didn’t think of you figure you're going to a family event and think people aren't going to bring items like that but it's definitely concerning and definitely does put some heightened scare into going into public places," shared Salgado, who was visiting Monday afternoon with her young child.

The owner on Facebook said, "we want to reassure our community that all guests and staff are safe, and no one was harmed during the incident."

A vape pen containing THC belonging to the teenager was also recovered from the scene, according to authorities.

Charges are still pending, but the sheriff’s office requested the 16-year-old boy face the following charges: disorderly conduct while armed, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18, and possession of THC.

Sheriff David Zoerner noted, "gun safety starts with responsible ownership, secure storage and preventing unauthorized access. We remain committed to keeping firearms out of the wrong hands and getting illegally possessed guns off our streets.”
