WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Investigators are looking into what caused an early morning fire in Waukesha that left one person dead. It happened at a home on University Drive.

The victim who died in the fire was home alone at the time. Fire crews say it doesn't appear to be suspicious.

"I heard a lot of sirens and fire trucks going by in our area, and I thought okay, what's going on," said Lisa Siem, who lives nearby.

After getting several 911 calls, fire crews responded to this house on S. University near Minot Lane just after 5 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, they were met with flames and heavy smoke.

"Within eight minutes, they were able to knock down the fire, and unfortunately, that's where they end up locating the decedent," said Dan Baumann, Captain of Police.

The close-knit community is saddened by the loss. Family members of the victim are visibly distraught, but they leaned on one another for support.

Crews say they'll be here for the family as they continue to mourn.

"We're gonna walk this journey with them. This is a grieving journey, this is a journey where we're gonna find the answers to how this started so they can survive and continue with their grieving process."

At this time, the victim has not been identified. Fire investigators, along with the ATF, are looking into the cause.
