Woman seriously injured in Mount Pleasant accident after SUV swerves to avoid oncoming vehicle

MOUNT PLEASANT, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Mount Pleasant Police are searching for the vehicle involved in an accident that left a woman seriously injured.

Police were called to Hwy 32 and Hansche Road after a caller reported an accident involving an SUV and a red car which fled the scene.

Upon arrival, officers located two people injured inside of the SUV. The driver was treated for minor injuries and the passenger was taken by Flight for Life for treatment of serious injuries.

The driver of the SUV and a witness both told police that a red car was traveling southbound on Highway 32 in the right lane. The SUV was traveling southbound on Hwy 32 in the left lane. The red vehicle then allegedly swerved into the SUV's lane of traffic, causing the driver of the SUV to swerve to the left to avoid striking the car.

The SUV struck the center median, causing the operator to lose control. The SUV then struck two stop signs and rolled over into a ditch on the west side of Hwy 32.

The red vehicle fled the scene. It is believed to be a red Chrysler 2000.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Mount Pleasant Police Department.

The investigation remains ongoing.
