On Saturday morning October 10, at 6:16 AM, Mount Pleasant Police Officers along with South Shore fire rescue services were dispatched to 1636 Richard Avenue, in the Lake Park subdivision of the Village of Mount Pleasant, for a car accident.

Callers reported a one vehicle crash off of State Highway 32, into a garage. Upon arrival, police located a vehicle which had struck a garage.

The vehicle operated by 23-year-old Khala Justine Garcia had been traveling southbound on State Highway 32 when she lost control of her car. Garcia crossed over the northbound lanes of 32, entering the east ditch line, heading towards the dead end of Richard Avenue.

The vehicle then struck a road sign, wooden stockade fence and another fence before continuing through the backyard and hitting a garage.

When the car hit the garage a collector vehicle stored there received extensive damage. The vehicle continued through the garage, and partially exited through the west wall of the garage before coming to rest.

The garage was structurally compromised by the impact of the vehicle.

Garcia was transported by rescue squad to Wheaton-Franciscan St. Mary’s emergency room for non-life threatening facial injuries, and lacerations. Mount Pleasant building inspector was called to the scene due to the compromised structural integrity of the garage.

Garcia was cited for OWI, operating with a suspended license, reckless driving and operation of vehicle without insurance.
