Fond du Lac woman critically injured after being assaulted with an axe, suspect arrested

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 38-year-old woman has been hospitalized after Fond du Lac police said she was attacked with an axe at a residence near Algoma and Merrill.

Officers responded to a 911 call reporting the assault and serious bleeding before locating the woman with multiple lacerations.

The assault reportedly happened on Sunday, June 22 at 2:38 p.m., according to police. Emergency personnel provided aid and transported the woman to SSM Health, after which she was airlifted to Theda Medical Center in Neenah.

Police say the woman suffered life-threatening injuries including deep lacerations to her head, arms and back. She underwent extensive surgery and was listed in stable condition by Sunday evening.

A 34-year-old man was arrested following a coordinated search by multiple law enforcement agencies. His vehicle was found near Germantown and he was taken into custody after a short pursuit.

Charges are pending.
