Woman Arrested for DUI with Kids in the Car after Causing Accident
On Thursday, September 1 at 8:20 PM, Mount Pleasant Police Officers were dispatched to the area of State Highway 11/Durand Avenue and Oakes Road for a crash with unknown injuries. Upon arrival, Officers observed a two vehicle crash. with a Blue Mitsubishi Gallant and a Silver Volkswagen Passat.
The Mitsubishi was operated by a woman with two passengers under the age of 16. The Volkswagen was also operated by woman with no passengers. Through the course of investigating the accident, it was determined that the driver of the Mitsubishi failed to yield the right of way as she performed a left turn from Durand onto Oakes Road. This failure led to the direct cause of the crash striking a westbound vehicle.
The driver of the Mitsubishi as well as her children were treated at the scene by the South Shore Fire Department, but no one was transported to the hospital. Both children were seat-belted in the vehicle and no serious injuries were recorded.
The other driver in the Volkswagen was also treated at the scene but was not transported either.
The woman that caused the crash was required to take Standardized Field Sobriety tests which she failed and was taken into custody for Operating while under the Influence.
The children were turned over to a guardian.
