Wisconsin unveils 2 new license plate designs, blackout and retro butter yellow

Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT)

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Wisconsinites have two new designs of state license plates to choose from, including a blackout design and retro butter yellow design.

Gov. Tony Evers on Tuesday, Dec. 9, alongside the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), unveiled the new plates which -- according to the governor's office -- are estimated to generate more than $25 million for the state's transportation fund in the first three years.

The blackout plate features an all-black background with white letters, numbers, and outline.

The retro yellow or "butter" license plate dates back to the 70s, featuring black letters on a yellow background.

According to WisDOT, both license plates will feature the state name on top like all current Wisconsin plates, and the slogan “America’s Dairyland” will display beneath the numbers and letters on the retro plate.

Both plates come with a one-time $15 issuance fee, plus a $25 annual registration fee.

A news release from Gov. Evers says income generated from the registration of these plates will help finance infrastructure improvement projects all across the state.
