(CBS WSAW) 18-year-old Miguel Oertel of Nekoosa was sentenced to 15 years in prison Monday for killing his ex-girlfriend's mother.
Wood County Judge Greg Potter handed down the sentence after hearing statements from the victim's family and Oertel.
In August 2015, deputies were searching for the reportedly suicidal teen when they got a call reporting two people had been shot at a home in Saratoga.
Investigators say Oertel was trying to shoot himself, but 47-year-old Theresa Coates was shot when she grabbed the end of his gun.
He then turned the gun on himself but survived.
