Wisconsin DOT unveils Pedestrian Traffic Signal by Milwaukee Co. Zoo

It's not your grandparents' stoplight but it certainly serves it's purpose.

There's a new traffic signal in front of the Milwaukee County zoo on Bluemound Road, and it's specifically triggered by pedestrians wanting to cross the street with a push of a button.

It's called a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon. And even though it's high tech and has a different shape, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation says you shouldn't be confused or intimidated. Instead, treat it like any other traffic signal.

This new light is part of the overall Zoo Interchange project, expected to be done in 2018. Meantime WISDOT tells us the Bluemound Road Bridge should be open to the public by the end of the month.
