Wisconsin DOT shares safety tips during Crash Responder Safety Week

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is observing Crash Responder Safety Week from Nov. 13 - 17, highlighting the importance of driver awareness to ensure the safety of first responders. This event has been officially recognized by Gov. Tony Evers.

Statistics released by WisDOT in a Monday, Nov. 13 press release underscore the risks faced by first responders in Wisconsin. Annually, the state sees over 132,000 crashes, with law enforcement, EMS, firefighters and tow truck drivers often being the first on the scene. In 2022, 326 responders were injured, and five lost their lives while on duty.

WisDOT offers specific guidelines to keep responders safe. Drivers are encouraged to eliminate distractions, obey the law by moving over or slowing down when approaching emergency vehicles with flashing lights and avoid using handheld cell phones in emergency response areas.

The “Steer It, Clear It” policy also advises drivers to move drivable vehicles to a safe area off the road before calling 911, aiding in traffic flow and safety.

Road condition updates and incident information are available at 511wi.gov.

The state is also showing a commitment to responder safety by offering regular Traffic Incident Management training for first responders, a program designed to enhance roadside incident management, emphasizing safety, efficiency and standardized communication across agencies.
