Wisconsin DNR offers ice safety tips as cold weather settles in
MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- With Wisconsin's famous cold weather underway, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is urging residents across the state to exercise caution on ice.
Highlighting the unpredictable nature of ice due to changing temperatures, the DNR issued a Thursday, Nov. 30 press release to emphasize that no ice is necessarily safe.
The department points out that early ice, often seen after cold nights, can be misleadingly thin and unable to support weight. Temperature swings, winds, currents and underground springs all contribute to varying ice conditions.
For accurate ice conditions, the DNR advises consulting local fishing clubs, bait shop, or outfitters, as these sources routinely check ice status. Another recommendation is to avoid travel on ice whenever possible, and to inform others of travel plans if a trip in the ice is necessary.
The DNR's ice safety basics include carrying a cell phone, wearing a life jacket or float coat, using ice creepers on boots, carrying a spud bar for checking ice and having spikes and a rope for emergencies. In case of falling in, it's crucial to remain calm and call for help. The DNR also advises against traveling in unfamiliar areas or at night and stresses the importance of having a detailed plan of action.
