Wildfire smoke grounds Flight for Life, unable to respond to Menomonee Falls crash
MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Flight for Life was unable to respond to the scene of a crash in Menomonee Falls Tuesday afternoon, June 27, due to decreased visibility from wildfire smoke.
The crash involved a van and motorcyclist, according to police, who was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
According to Executive Director Leif Erickson, Flight for Life was available but could not accept the call because smoke had reduced visibility to an unsafe level.
Erickson says the Federal Aviation Administration sets the minimum daytime visibility at two miles -- anything below that makes it unsafe to fly.
He said Flight for Life has been grounded in the past due to foggy conditions. But he said of the smoke, "This is a first for me in my career, and I've been doing this a long time."
