West Allis and Wauwatosa fire departments could potentially merge

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Two local fire departments serving tens of thousands of people could soon merge as one department.
The proposal for the West Allis and Wauwatosa fire departments to merge as one was discussed at the West Allis Common Council meeting Tuesday night.
Kail Decker, West Allis city attorney, says a new report shows the city’s fire department merging with Wauwatosa would save $1.3 million in the first year and $7 million after five years.
Decker says there would be no reduction of emergency services for either city or cuts for frontline workers, as there is a high call demand for both cities.
Interim West Allis Fire Chief Jason Schaak says with the current struggles the department is facing, this is the right move.
"We've been trying to do more with less, and now we are just getting to the point where this is the next option for us,” said Schaak.
With both departments underfunded, the city says the proposed joint department could increase taxes and would be allowed to increase its budget 2%, plus inflation each year.
However, after hearing this plan could lead to improvements and less trouble ahead, some residents say they are on board.
“We’ve got to come out here to let them know how we feel," said Carla Krueger, a West Allis resident. "You know, if we like it or not, what's going on, you know, but I like this.”
The proposal is still in the early stages, with the council voting to move forward in the planning and proposal process.
There will be a lot to figure out moving forward, including new union contracts for a joint department.
