NOW: ’We’re their family’: 5th annual Breaking Bread Community Feast keeps Milwaukee tradition alive

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Thanksgiving sunshine brought hundreds to Milwaukee's north side for a hot meal at the 5th annual Breaking Bread Community Feast.

"This is a time of year that some people may not have family, so we're their family," said Sequanna Taylor, vice president of Dream Team United MKE.

Breaking Bread has become a tradition for Dream Team United, sharing a Thanksgiving meal with the entire community.

"We have hot food, turkey, macaroni, mashed potatoes, green beans," Taylor said.

They provided food for more than a thousand people, all cooked by Taste of Love Catering Company.

"We all have a heart to serve," said Taste of Love's owner, Shelita Furlow. "That's my love language, and this is what I do."

The event at 35th and Center is run completely by volunteers.

"I came one year as a guest, but this year, I decided I wanted to serve," said volunteer, Denise Everett. "It really feels good. It feels good."

The community feast draws in Milwaukeeans from every zip code.

"Even before we started at 12 pm, there was a line down the street," Taylor said.

Along with hot food, each year they supply free groceries and winter wear.

"We brought about a good 200 coats today, a hundred pairs of snowpants, about 50 pairs of boots," said Mariah Smith, Founder of Snow Day Fits.

Dream Team's founder, Farina Brooks, says it's about lending a hand, no matter what someone is going through.

"Our goal is just to really love them and treat them like people," Brooks said.
