WEC says 'suspicious' substance received in mail deemed non-hazardous
CBS 58 MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) says they received a piece of "suspicious mail" Wednesday containing an unidentified powdery substance.
A staff member identified the incoming mail shortly before 3 p.m., according to WEC, which they say appeared to match suspicious mail received in other states.
The commission says the mail was not opened and authorities were alerted immediately.
After a "thorough examination," it was determined the mail was not dangerous.
“Let this be very clear: this incident will not shake us,” WEC Administrator Meagan Wolfe said. “Election officials are fully prepared to handle many challenges, and this will have no impact on our unwavering commitment to deliver a safe and secure election."
She added, “Violence and intimidation have no place in our democracy, and those performing civic duties must never fear for their safety.”
WEC says municipal and county clerks have been given a memo outlining safe mail handling procedures.
