Wauwatosa, West Allis councils give green light to fire department merger
CBS 58 WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Wauwatosa's Common Council approved a merger between their fire department and the West Allis Fire Department Tuesday night.
The West Allis Common Council also approved the merger in their vote about an hour later.
West Allis passed the ordinance in a unanimous vote; in Wauwatosa, the vote was 12-2.
One alder who wasn't in favor said the deal doesn't have anything to prevent a reduction in services and wanted an amendment barring a reduction.
He also wasn't in favor of the agreement lasting 10 years and suggested a five-year term. Despite that, Wauwatosa's council did not make amendments and passed the merger.
“This merger is an exciting step forward for both West Allis and Wauwatosa,” said West Allis Mayor Dan Devine. “By joining forces, we’re creating a stronger, more efficient fire and EMS service that benefits every resident. This partnership means faster response times, better use of taxpayer dollars, and access to additional funding opportunities that will strengthen public safety for years to come.”
"For many years, through shared service agreements, our fire departments have worked closely together," said Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis McBride. "The merger is a logical step forward, and will preserve and strengthen the level of service we offer to residents of both communities."
The cities say there are several next steps before the joint fire department becomes a reality.
